For more than a century the hydropower resources have been harnessed in Norway, and the country is practically 100 % supplied with hydro-electricity from more than 850 hydropower plants, including half of the world’s underground power plants. It is correct to claim that hydropower has been the foundation for the development of the nation’s industry and hence economic prosperity. We believe that other countries with unexploited hydropower resources may benefit from the Norwegian experience of social, environmental, technical and economic aspects of hydropower development.

In countries with a developed hydropower industry, the current focus is on costeffective use of hydro installations in mixed and deregulated systems, with emphasis on the possible added value of hydro-electricity as an environmentally friendly energy source.

Norway, with its history of extensive hydropower development and nearly two decades of experience with a competitive electricity market, provides an excellent arena for international gatherings of hydropower professionals. Several such events have taken place during the past few decades; Hydropower’87, Hydropower’92, ICOLD Annual Meeting in 1995, Hydropower’97, the seminar Optimum Use of Run-of-river Hydropower Schemes in 1999, Hydropower’01 and ICOLD European Symposium in 2001, and Hydropower’05. Once again it is time to welcome the world’s hydropower experts to Norway.
